What is scabies?

Scabies or scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by the scabies mite. You recognize scabies by the increasing itching, especially at night or when it is warm. The itching can occur all over the body. Sometimes you may also get blisters and red bumps on your skin or see red streaks where the mite has dug passageways.

Is it treatable?

Yes, scabies is treatable with cream or tablets. But you should also take measures such as washing bedding and clothing at 60 degrees. It is important that roommates and close contacts get treated at the same time. Even if they have no symptoms (yet). This is the only way to prevent the scabies from coming back.

Steps plan

Elleke Leclercq, nurse at the GGD Zuid-Limburg, developed the "Steps plan for dealing with scabies. This plan describes exactly what to do, where and when. Follow the step-by-step plan for dealing with scabies with permethrin cream for proper treatment. In the pharmacy, we can give you more information about this.

The roadmap is a manual to follow for 12 days. It explains that everyone in the household must be treated on the same day and at the same time. And: until everyone is treated, do not have skin-to-skin contact with others. In addition, specific steps are named. For example, "Put on disposable gloves. Lubricate all the way from the edge of the jaw down to under the feet.' And, "Take the used bedding off the bed. Put clean bedding on it for the next night.'

The plan also gives advice for washing clothes and bedding, cleaning furniture and dog baskets, and when to put away worn clothing in a bag and take it out again, as well as when animals can safely be "petted and cuddled" again.
