The dangers of the sun

If you spend a lot of time in the sun unprotected, your skin gets damaged. Even if you don't burn. UV radiation increases the risk of skin aging, pigmentation spots and skin cancer. According to the KWF, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the Netherlands. Fortunately, you can do a lot yourself to protect your skin.

Protect with: protect, dress, lubricate

Diminishing the risk of sun damage is easy. Remember the three most important steps:

  • Protect: Between noon and 3 p.m., stay out of the sun as much as possible. Seek shade or stay indoors.
  • Clothes: Wear airy, protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat or cap. Do not let children walk in swimwear for too long. Wet clothing lets more UV radiation through.
  • Lubricate: Use sunscreen with at least factor 30, preferably factor 50 for children. Apply 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun, use enough (at least 7 teaspoons for an adult) and repeat every 2 hours. After swimming, sweating or drying off, reapply.

Please note that by the water you will burn faster due to reflection from the sun. Make sure you have extra protection with clothes, parasol, sunglasses and sun hat.

Sunscreen is safe

Tories are circulating on social media that sunscreen would be dangerous. For example, it would interfere with hormones or even be carcinogenic. This is not true! According to experts from RIVM and KWF, sunscreen is safe to use, also for children. There is no evidence that sunscreen is harmful, but there is plenty of evidence that sunlight without protection increases the risk of skin cancer. So: lubrication remains important.
