Why sunscreen is so important

The sun's UV radiation damages your skin, even when it's not hot or when it's cloudy. You may not notice it right away, but the damage builds up. Burns cause red, sore skin in the short term. In the long term, it increases the risk of skin cancer.

According to KWF Kankerbestrijding, more than 80,000 people get skin cancer each year. The main cause: too much sun without protection.

How often and how much sunscreen do you use?

Applying sunscreen properly is important, but many people don't do it the right way. Here are some bright tips:

  1. Lubricate 15 to 30 minutes before going outside.

  2. Use factor 30 or higher, especially for fair skin, children or if you will be outside for a long time.

  3. Use a minimum of 7 teaspoons at a time for an adult:

    • 1 for face and neck
    • 2 for arms and shoulders
    • 2 for legs and feet
    • 2 for torso (front and back)
  4. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you sweat or swim.

For children, use a sunscreen with factor 50, and keep them out of the sun as much as possible between noon and 3 p.m., when the sun is strongest.

Which sunscreen suits your skin?

Every skin is different. Do you have fair skin, many moles, or do you take medications such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatories? Then your skin is more sensitive to the sun.
