Why Personal Advice Is Important
You’ve been prescribed a new medication and are wondering when to take it. Or maybe you’re buying a pain reliever on your own, even though you’re also taking prescription medications. In that case, it’s reassuring to have someone review your situation with you. We’re familiar with your medication history and can ask the questions that are important for providing safe advice.
What We Do for You
- We review your prescription. Among other things, we check whether the dosage is correct and whether your new medication is compatible with your other medications. This is called medication review. Please also tell us which over-the-counter medications you’re taking and whether there have been any changes in your health. This will help us better assess what we need to pay attention to.
- We’ll explain how to use a medication. You’ll learn how much to take and when, what side effects might occur, and what’s on the label. For an inhaler or eye drops, we can demonstrate how to use them and practice with you.
- We provide advice for minor symptoms. For example, with headaches, colds, or congestion, we’ll ask who the advice is for, how long the symptom has been present, and what you’ve already tried. Sometimes self-care is appropriate. Other times, we’ll advise you to contact your primary care physician.
- We’re here to help if taking medication is difficult. Do you ever forget a dose or lose track of your schedule? Talk to us about it. We can see if a dosing schedule or another solution might help you.
Together with your primary care physician and other healthcare providers
Your primary care physician knows your medical situation; we ensure the safe use of your medications. If a dosage raises questions or you’re experiencing significant side effects, we’ll consult with your doctor if necessary. We know you, your doctor knows you, and you know us. This way, you receive personalized support from your trusted neighborhood pharmacy.
Over-the-counter and prescription
- Over-the-counter (self-care): You can ask us for advice on, for example, acetaminophen for pain or a remedy for hay fever. We’ll assess whether the medication is appropriate for your symptoms, age, and other medications you’re taking. If your symptoms persist or worsen, please contact your primary care physician.
- With a prescription from your primary care physician or specialist: we’ll review the prescription and explain how to use the medication. If you notice a possible side effect or are having trouble using it, please let us know. Do not stop taking a prescribed medication on your own.
