A pharmaceutical consultation is a conversation between you and the pharmacist in which your healthcare questions are discussed. Do you have questions such as: How can I best taper off my antacid? Could my muscle cramps be caused by my medications? Could I stop taking my cholesterol reducer? For questions like these, you can make an appointment with us for a pharmaceutical consultation. Then we'll take the time to walk through your medication plan properly so we can give appropriate advice. In most cases this is not possible at the counter, also because of the confidentiality of your data.

What can you discuss during a consultation?

  • Compose an intake schedule
  • Compose a tapering schedule
  • Discuss a complaint or side effect
  • Discuss a changed situation
  • Advice from a physician
  • Answering a substantive question
  • Assessing a change in dosage or form of medication
  • Counseling or explaining to a family caregiver

As with the dentist and physical therapist, there are fees associated with an appointment with your pharmacist. Most appointments are reimbursed once a year by the health insurance company. There is no fixed rate for this; it varies per appointment type, per insurer and per policy. Also whether it comes out of your deductible or is outside of it.

Sometimes consultation fees are offset against reimbursement for dispensing medications. If you want to know more about the costs in advance, it's best to check with your health insurer and see if your deductible has already been used up. Your pharmacist can also check with you.
