Day of Mantel Care
The important role of the informal caregiver
Today is the Day of the Informal Caregiver. A special day to reflect on all the work a family caregiver does. As a pharmacy we want to put the caregiver in the spotlight on this day. Below we explain how we can work together from within the pharmacy to provide good medication care for the patient.
Your Role as a Caregiver
As a caregiver, you care for someone who is no longer fully able to do so for themselves. This can be a family member, friend or neighbor. The informal caregiver is there to help with daily things and supports where necessary. Medication use is often part of this and can sometimes be complicated. Especially if multiple medications are involved, or if extra care is needed to take the medication correctly and on time.
The informal caregiver may help to pick up the medication, to remember when it is time to take something, or to check if the medication is still working properly. This is of great value, and we as a pharmacy would like to help with this.
Cooperating with the pharmacy
Caregivers can always come to us with questions about medications. Together, we can ensure that medications are taken on time and in the right amount. A few ways we can support the family caregiver:
- Medication Counseling: If the patient takes several medications, we can help keep track. We explain how each medication works and how to tell if it is going well.
- Medication Packing: We can pack the medications in a weekly box or in a medication roll (baxter roll). This makes it easier to keep track and the caregiver knows exactly when to give which medication.
- Return service: When medications run out, we can arrange for a new supply to be ready automatically. This saves extra time and effort.
- Personal advice: We are always ready to give advice, for example on side effects or what to do if the patient is forgetful with the medication.
Invitation to care together
Mantle care can be tough. We like to take the time to work with the caregiver to figure out the best way to support the patient. On Family Caregiver Day, we want to show our appreciation for the efforts of family caregivers. What informal caregivers do makes a big difference. Don't hesitate to contact us so that together we can make medication care run as smoothly as possible.
