Ozempic; what is it anyway?
Tiktok is full of it and even the Dutch newspapers headlines "Ozempic remains popular with people who want to lose weight. The drug is currently available on a limited basis in the Netherlands. And take special note: Ozempic is not registered in our country as a slimming agent! So what is it and what's up with it?
What is Ozempic?
Ozempic, also known as semaglutide, is a prescription-only drug that lowers blood sugar levels. By taking semaglutide, you are less likely to suffer damage from diabetes. Such as wounds that heal poorly, nerve pain, kidney problems, heart disease and going blind. It is prescribed to people with diabetes mellitus, or diabetes who also have a greatly increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Ozempic also slows gastric emptying and reduces the feeling of hunger, which leads to weight reduction.
How to use the drug?
Ozempic is available in the form of tablets and injections. How to use the drug:
- Injections: you use this medicine once a week. Do it on a fixed day and a fixed time. Then you are less likely to forget it. Inject this medicine into your thigh, abdomen or upper arm.
- Tablets: take the tablet with a sip of water at least half an hour before you have breakfast. On an empty stomach, this medicine works best. (Source: pharmacy.co.uk)
Side effects
As with any medication, there are possible side effects to consider, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. But more side effects are known. In case of serious side effects, always contact your doctor.
Delivery
Ozempic is currently in limited supply. In consultation with your doctor, the pharmacist may recommend you then switch to the tablet form, called Rybelsus. The tablets should be taken daily.
