It's almost constantly in the news; the changing of our climate. And...it is now National Climate Week. The central government is calling on us to live more consciously. Healthcare is taking more and more responsibility for the climate. And also in pharmacy we are increasingly aware of sustainability in (pharmaceutical) care.

Duurzaamheid

Transition to more environmentally friendly health care

Health care is a major polluter and thus partly responsible for climate change. This sector in particular must become a leader in sustainability. Initiatives such as Care for Climate, founded by healthcare providers, stand for sustainable healthcare. The goal is to increase knowledge and awareness of the relationship between climate and health, to encourage healthcare providers to commit to more sustainable healthcare and to convince policy makers to initiate the transition to a more environmentally friendly healthcare.

Sustainability also in pharmacy

In pharmacy, too, we want to take more and more steps to contribute to environmental protection. For example, many pharmacies are already working with digital prescription processing, we have our own vision for more environmentally conscious purchasing and we are making more use of recycled packaging. 'Energy efficiency' is also on the local pharmacy agenda. Some pharmacies choose environmentally friendly delivery or make medication dispensers available to reduce car trips. At the policy level in The Hague, medicine take-back is an important issue, as well as the use of sustainable raw materials, recycling of empty medicine bottles and packaging and environmentally friendly transport.

This year's National Climate Week is from October 30 to November 5, 2023. Let's all do something for a better climate. What sustainable step are you taking today?
