About antibiotic ointments
As a pharmacy, we explain how antibiotic ointments can help. Antibiotic ointments and creams kill bacteria. One example is fusidic acid. These creams or ointments are available only by prescription.
When are these antibiotics prescribed by the doctor?
- Crentendrop, also called impetigo, is an infectious skin infection that occurs mainly in young children. The infection is caused by bacteria and usually begins with red spots or vesicles on the skin, often around the mouth or nose. These vesicles burst open and form yellowish scabs that look like currants - hence the name.
- Slight, superficial skin infections that are not extensive and are caused by bacteria sensitive to fusidic acid, especially infections caused by staphylococci.
Resistance to fusidic acid
An increasing number of bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus (staphylococci), are developing resistance to fusidic acid. This means that these bacteria no longer respond well to treatment with this ointment. Especially with frequent or prolonged use, the risk of resistance increases.
How do we prevent resistance?
-
Always use fusidic acid as directed.
Do not use more often, longer or shorter than prescribed. -
Do not store for future use.
Return residual packaging after treatment to pharmacy for destruction to avoid unnecessary or improper use later. -
Keep to the prescribed treatment duration.
Do not stop treatment earlier, but also do not continue longer than necessary (usually 7 to maximum 14 days). -
Wash your hands well after applying the cream or ointment.
This will prevent the spread of bacteria to other places or people. -
If infections recur, consult with the doctor.
Regular recurrence of skin infections may mean that fusidic acid is no longer effective. The doctor may then choose another treatment.
By following this advice, you will help prevent resistance and keep fusidic acid effective against skin infections.
Tips and warnings
- Use: Apply the ointment to a well-cleaned wound. With impetigo: wash hands regularly, use a clean towel and do not let your child scratch the wounds. See also https://www.thuisarts.nl/krentenbaard for more information.
- Warning: Do not use ointment on large open wounds or on wounds that are already irritated unless recommended by an adult or physician.
- Side effects: Sometimes the skin may become red or burn slightly. If this gets too bad, let your parents or pharmacist know right away.
