The 9 facts & myths about your medicine

A lot of fake news goes around about medicine, for example through TikTok. Sometimes it seems credible, but it can harm your health. We explain clearly what is fact and what is fable.

Feit of fabel
  1. "Antibiotics help against flu or colds" → Myth

Flu and colds are caused by viruses. Antibiotics only work against bacteria (source: RIVM.nl).

  2. "You should always finish a course of antibiotics" → Fact

Stop too soon? Then the infection can return and resistant bacteria develop.

  3. "Ordering medicine online is safe" → Myth

At your local pharmacy, we always check for safety, dosage, interactions and quality. Many Internet sellers lack that care.
In the Netherlands, there have been investigations into illegal web shops (such as the FunCaps-affair) in which drugs were sold without a prescription and without medical control. This can pose serious risks to your health.

➡ So always order your drugs from your local pharmacy.

  4. "The birth control pill makes you infertile" → Myth

This persistent fake news on social media is not true. After stopping the pill, you just become fertile again.

  5. "Natural remedies are always safe" → Myth

Herbs and supplements can have strong interactions, for example St. John's wort with antidepressants.

  6. "You can stop your medication when you feel better" → Myth

For many conditions, you don't notice an immediate effect. Stopping too soon can be dangerous. Always consult with us or your doctor.

  7. "Taking twice if you forget a dose is a good idea" → Myth

This can lead to serious side effects. Call or ask us what to do - better to ask once too much than once wrong.

  8. "Over-the-counter medicines can always be used safely" → Myth

Examples such as paracetamol, nasal sprays or stomach tablets can harm or cause problems together with other medications. More info: Thuisarts.nl - Medications

  9. "The pharmacy only dispenses medications" → Myth
