Week of the Young Family Caregiver: more than you think

Young family caregivers care, worry and sometimes miss care themselves. The theme is "More than you think." A young family caregiver can help with medications, appointments or aids. This is valuable, but it can also be a lot. You don't have to do it alone.

What can you do as a family caregiver?

You can help by keeping a current medication record. Also note non-prescription medications, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, and herbal remedies. Report to us if your loved one has trouble swallowing, often forgets a dose, becomes drowsy, falls, is dizzy or develops new symptoms.

You can also be a contact person for questions about use, action or side effects. For example, constipation with oxycodone or morphine, coughing with some blood pressure medications, or bruising with anticoagulants such as acenocoumarol, apixaban or rivaroxaban.

How we help with safe medication use

When we take new medications, we check to see if the drug is compatible with other medications, allergies and the situation at home. We pay attention to double medication, interactions and times of use. For example, we look along with diabetes medication such as metformin or insulin, inhalation for asthma or COPD, and maintenance medication for high blood pressure.

We work closely with the general practitioner or specialist. Short lines help if a drug does not work enough, gives side effects or needs to be taken differently. We know you, your loved one, your doctor knows you and you know us.
