Take care of yourself in winter
You wouldn't know it, but it really is winter. We've got some specific "care-good-for-you" tips for winter, along with examples of OTC products from pharmacies that you can use. First, some background on using OTC products and what exactly we mean by them.
Since the Medicines Act of 2007 went into effect, self-care drugs have been divided into three categories. These categories are:
- Only Pharmacy (UA): Medicines with a small potential risk
- Only Pharmacy or Drugstore (UAD): Medicines with a relatively small potential risk
- General Sale (AV):Medicines with a very small risk
Drugs in the UA category may be dispensed only at pharmacies, drugs in the UAD category only at pharmacies and drugstores, and drugs in the AV category are generally available. The latter means that these drugs may be available not only at pharmacies and drugstores, but also through outlets such as supermarkets or gas stations. But the use of UADs and AVs is never entirely without risk, and an employee at the supermarket, gas station or drugstore knows nothing or very little about possible interactions. Playing it safe? The tips for winter:
- Keep your skin hydrated
Cold can make your skin dry and cause cracking and chapping. Therefore, choose a good, moisturizing cream or ointment. Products with urea or glycerin are suitable for retaining moisture. Apply after you shower, when your skin is still moist, for best results. And if you're not sure which product is best for you, ask us for tailored advice.
- Take care of your lips
Cracked lips or the corners of your mouth are a common problem in winter. Use a lip balm with beeswax, shea butter or coconut oil to moisturize your lips and protect them from the cold and wind. Lubricate regularly, especially when you go outside. And if you're unsure which lip balm is best for you, we're here at the pharmacy to help you make the right choice. - Coldness
Coldness and flu are common during this period. There is little you can do about it because it is a virus. Saline nasal sprays can help you with nasal congestion and sinus pressure. For fever and pain, paracetamol or ibuprofen are good options. Ask us for advice if in doubt.
Think about vitamins
Your immune system could use some extra support in winter. Take some vitamin D supplements if you don't get outside much, and also consider vitamin C supplements to boost your immune system.
